A Little Girl's Bedroom
Meredith, NY
For our daughter Charlotte’s room, we wanted to create a warm, whimsical space that could grow with her while respecting the historic character of our 1830s farmhouse. We refreshed the room with soft, timeless colors, vintage-inspired furnishings, and practical built-ins to maximize storage and play space. The result is a cozy, light-filled retreat that feels personal and inviting, yet classic enough to evolve as Charlotte does.
This sweet upstairs bedroom has been a slow, thoughtful transformation over the past three years. Originally our primary bedroom, the space was reimagined for our daughter Charlotte as she grew from toddlerhood into a little girl with her own tastes and interests. The design evolved to reflect her love of pinks, yellows, and oranges—colors inspired by the cheerful Pieced Circle Rug that became the anchor for the room.
Because the existing floors were in poor condition, we added a layer of laminate for a quick, livable solution that can be removed later to restore the original wood. Old wood paneling and wallpaper were encapsulated under a thin layer of gypsum board, protecting the historic materials for the future while creating a fresh backdrop for her new space.
We also maximized storage and play space with a built-in closet nook made from IKEA Billy bookcases, complete with a cushioned platform for reading or daydreaming. The result is a warm, whimsical room that feels classic enough to grow with Charlotte while still capturing her vibrant personality. Though there are still finishing touches to come, Charlotte is thriving in the space—proof that sometimes a room can be both a work in progress and a beloved retreat.
